PROJECT: Book Design
BRIEF: In need of an organized system—that would fit on a sailboat—for my own large collection of recipes, but unable to find anything practical or small enough, it gradually dawned on me that a book compilation could be the best solution. I proceeded with the idea, found a self-publishing house (Lulu.com) that could accommodate over 700 pages, and began a process that would take nearly a year of my spare time to finish.
SOLUTION: A 704-page book of more than 650 collected recipes designed, compiled, edited, and self-published, including an InDesign-generated table of contents, and twenty-four separate chapter indexes for cross-referencing. A full-color cover with black and white interior, some pages include vector art created in Adobe Illustrator. Design and production were within the publisher’s spec guidelines, and the finished PDF was successfully uploaded on the first attempt. Besides fitting nicely on a sailboat’s bookshelf, it makes a lovely gift for family, friends, and others who might be interested. The book is currently available for purchase (at printer’s cost) or as a free PDF download at Shanachie’s On- & Offshore Recipes
